Liberation Memorial, Gomel, Belarus

This T-34/85 tank is displayed in front of Gomel’s Central Stadium at the junction of Victory Street and Soviet Street (ул. Победы and Советская ул.). It commemorates the city’s liberation on November 26, 1943, by forces of the Belarussian Front under General Konstantin Rokossovski.

A plaque on the front of the pedestal lists the armies that took part in the operation:

  • 3rd Army (Lt.-General A. V. Gorbatov)
  • 48th Army (Lt.General P. A. Romanenko)
  • 11th Army (Lt.-General I. I. Fedyuninski)
  • 16th Air Army (Lt.-Gen. S. I. Rudenko)

The liberation was marked in Moscow with a salute of 20 volleys fired by 224 cannons.
